Nature in Tenerife

Nature in Tenerife

Macaronesia or Macaronesian Region is the collective name that is familiar with the five groups of islands in the central area of the North Atlantic; these are the archipelagos of Azores, Madeira , Wild Canary Islands and Cape Verde. According to data from March 1994 from the former CEIC ( Ecological Center of Icona in the Canary Islands ), the total number of plant species in Spain amounted to 1919 species, of which 502 are endemic canaries. As for the fauna, there are over 6000 in the Canary Islands species of invertebrates and 109 species of vertebrates, with 20 of these introduced species. Despite its small size, 2034 Kms. square, being the largest of all the Canary Islands, the island of Tenerife has an astonishing diversity of organic fruit some special environmental conditions, because the rugged terrain of the island changes locally weather conditions generally, leading to a rich variety of microclimates. This abundance of microclimates, and therefore natural habitat, is clearly reflected in vegetation island, formed by a rich and varied flora (1400 species of higher plants), which includes many endemic canaries (200) and Tenerife (140 ). With this heritage of some 140 plant species unique, the island of Tenerife presents the closest relationship of endemic flora of all Macaronesia. On the other hand, the various volcanic materials, under the combined action of the weather, give rise to a wide range of soils. The combination of these factors determines the existence of very diverse habitats that are home to many plant and animal communities that interact to form the unique ecosystem of Tenerife.
